Enjoying the Internet while using a VPN

Browsing the Internet, whether for business purposes or for personal reasons, can put a person’s sensitive information at risk. As technology advances, malicious third parties are becoming more proficient at extracting this data. As a means of counteracting this, people are turning to the services of a virtual private network—also known as a VPN. With a VPN, browsing the Internet is more secure. All data that the user transmits and receives is encrypted, or scrambled, to ensure that it is not accessible by others.

Bypassing Location-Based Restrictions and Censorship

When traveling or living abroad, users may find it difficult to connect to their favorite websites and online services. This is often due to location-based restrictions. Many websites only allow access to users from specific countries. Another reason could be due to government censorship.

Countries like China are notorious for blocking access to many sites on the Internet. These factors can create communication difficulties when travelling. By using a VPN, especially one with servers located around the world, users can bypass these hurdles.

Benefiting from Increased Privacy

When users connect to the Internet, they are assigned an IP address by their Internet service provider (ISP). Their IP address allows website hosts to see their location as well as track their browsing habits. Online marketers and search engines will also tailor their results to the user’s location and interests. When a user connects through a VPN, however, their IP address is masked by an address assigned by the VPN provider.

Some ISPs perform deep-packet inspections on their user’s data when they are online. This is used to throttle connection speeds. When a user connects through a VPN, their information travels back and forth through secure tunnels. Their ISP will be able to see that they are communicating, but will not be able to see any of the data. In this way, a VPN further increases a user’s privacy.

Securing a Mobile Device

Devices such as smart phones, tablets and laptops are designed to be portable and able to access the Internet. The problem occurs when users take advantage of Wi-Fi hotspots. Because these connections are unsecured, users are compromising their browsing security. Wi-Fi hotspot connections are notorious for their ability to be hacked. A firewall or anti-virus software program will not work in protecting the user’s data transfers. A VPN, on the other hand, will. Because the all the user’s transmissions are encrypted, even if they are intercepted, they will be useless to a hacker.

Choosing a VPN Provider

There are many VPN service providers from which to choose. They offer varying levels of services. Users should look for a provider that has multiple servers, preferably in global locations, and many available IP addresses. They will also want to be sure that the provider they choose owns and maintains their own servers. Companies that house their own servers are more reliable and are able to provide guarantees on uptime. The VPN service should also offer a choice of encryption protocols and round-the-clock customer service. Finally, users should look for a USA VPN provider that is well-established with a good reputation.
